MARIA GOEPPERT-MAYER: March 9th

Maria Goeppert-Mayer won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics for the development of the Nuclear Shell Model. While her husband was a scientist, she did not collaborate with him scientifically in contrast to the first three women Nobel Laureates in science. Marie Sklodowska Curie’s first Nobel Prize in Physics, Irene Joliot-Curie Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and Gerty Cori’s Prize in Physiology or Medicine were all shared with their husbands. Maria Goeppert-Mayer did not share her prize with her husband as did Marie Sklodowska Curie when she won her second Nobel in 1911.
