Maxine Singer: March 10th

MAXINE SINGER MADE IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DECIPHERING OF THE GENETIC CODE AND TO OUR UNDERSTANDING OF RNA AND DNA. SHE HELPED ORGANIZE THE ASILOMAR CONFERENCE IN FEBRUARY 1975, AT WHICH SCIENTISTS AGREED TO IMPOSE RESTRICTIONS ON THE NEW AND CONTROVERSIAL SCIENCE OF RECOMBINANT DNA. FROM 1988 TO 2002, SINGER WAS PRESIDENT OF THE CARNEGIE INSTITUTION OF WASHINGTON.
